Morgan Freeman, the Hollywood actor, is in a serious condition in hospital following a car accident in the US.

The Oscar-winning star of The Shawshank Redemption and Batman film The Dark Knight had to be cut from the wreckage, along with his female passenger.

He was airlifted to the Regional Medical Centre in Memphis, Tennessee, where staff described his condition as "serious". He is believed to have suffered several broken bones.

The crash took place on a rural highway in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi.

Freeman, 71, was driving a Nissan Maxima belonging to his passenger, Demaris Meyer, when the vehicle left the road shortly before midnight on Sunday and flipped over several times before coming to land in a ditch. Both Freeman and Miss Meyer were wearing seatbelts.

A spokesman for the Mississippi Highway Patrol said there was no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved, but the cause of the crash was not immediately apparent.

Freeman was conscious when the emergency services arrived and was able to joke with onlookers, according to witnesses.

When one bystander attempted to take a photograph of the actor in the wreckage, Freeman said: "No freebies, no freebies."

Witness Clay McFerrin, who arrived at the scene shortly after the accident took place, said: "They had to use the 'jaws of life' [hydraulic cutters] to extract him from the vehicle. He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point."

Freeman lives in Charleston, Mississippi, with his second wife, Myrna, and co-owns a blues club in nearby Clarksdale.

He is currently starring in The Dark Knight as Lucius Fox, Batman's trusty aide.

His previous films include The Shawshank Redemption, Driving Miss Daisy and Million Dollar Baby, the latter earning him an Oscar in 2005.

Freeman's accident is the latest disaster to befall the cast of The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger, who plays The Joker, died in January from an accidental drugs overdose, while lead actor Christian Bale was arrested last month for an alleged assault, which he denies.
